After Magical Thinking, a collection of autobiographical pieces in which he appeared to be shamelessly imitating David Sedaris, Burroughs has more or less used up the rich comic legacy of his dysfunctional past, so that this latest collection, Possible Side Effects, is almost entirely confined to his day-to-day experiences in the present: a trip to a hotel, a visit to the doctor, the day he locked himself out of his apartment - things we all do. ![]() His second book, Dry, chronicled his young manhood as an alcoholic in advertising - a less singular experience, and consequently less interesting to read about. The book Running With Scissors was a hit because, even in the tortured childhood memoir genre, where the ante is being upped from minute to minute, Burroughs did have a striking tale to tell (though apparently much embellished, according to the various characters who subsequently brought lawsuits) and he told it with an appealing dark humour. Except that it's not unique any more, and only intermittently comical. As the film version of his first, bestselling memoir, Running With Scissors, prepares to open in Britain (after gruesomely bad reviews in the US), here comes Augusten Burroughs with yet more wry, comic tales of life drawn from his unique experience. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OL134449W Page-progression lr Page_number_confidence 94.97 Pages 598 Ppi 643 Related-external-id urn:isbn:1568957130 Access-restricted-item true Addeddate 23:32:30 Boxid IA135319 Boxid_2 CH102201 Camera Canon EOS 5D Mark II City New York Containerid_2 X0001 Curatenote shipped Donorīostonpubliclibrary Edition Bantam Books mass market ed. : Ashes to Ashes (9780752814209) by Hoag, Tami and a great selection of similar New, Used and Collectible Books available now at great prices. ![]() ![]() ![]() Masako and Gozen provide the softer aspects to the story, whereas Kwon and Nikko provide the intrigue and tension.Īs with all of the Spirals of Danu series, this is a difficult book to categorise in terms of genre there are the obvious comparison to The Talisman, albeit in a Far East setting, and one of my favourite books, Shōgun. Jion is thoroughly credible character, although hard of head and heart. ![]() With respect, I disagree this is a story about relationships - not only those that we have with other people (mentors, friends, foes, potential allies and certain villains), but also those that we have with ourselves.īeing honest, I guess the ending around about page two hundred (and it's three hundred pages long), but that did not stop me wanting read all the way through. Others have said it is a revenge story as young Jion seeks those responsible for the assassination of his brother and father. Several people have suggested that this is a war story, as it is set during the civil war. The Shackles Of A Name is easily the best book in the series (so far) for all sorts of reasons the unique setting of Oyashima the way that historical characters are brought to life and the mix of myth and fact.
